What are Maag gear cutting machines?

There are two types of shaping machines in vertical axis configuration; those using pinion types cutters and those that uses a rack type tool. The latter is most commonly known as Maag gear cutting machines. These types of machines operate on the generating principle, the piece to be shaped doing the transverse generating motion and the Maag gear cutting tool doing the cutting motion.
